Program: Emergency Response to Eastern Afghanistan Earthquake 2025
Project Period: 16 October 2025 – 15 January 2026
Implementing Partners: Your Voice Organization (YVO) partnership with Peace Winds Japan (PWJ)
Target Areas: Kunar Provinces
Following the devastating 6.0 magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on 31 August 2025, Peace Winds Japan, in partnership with Your Voice Organization (YVO), launched an emergency response to support communities severely affected in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. The earthquake caused widespread destruction, resulting in thousands of casualties and the collapse or severe damage of thousands of homes, particularly in remote and mountainous districts.
The disaster has significantly worsened existing humanitarian conditions, especially in areas hosting large numbers of returnees from neighboring countries. With nearly 500,000 people requiring assistance, emergency shelter and non-food items (NFIs) were identified as critical needs through field assessments and coordination with humanitarian partners.
This project provides life-saving NFI assistance to 1,243 of the most vulnerable households (approximately 8,700 people), prioritizing female-headed households, households headed by persons with disabilities or the elderly, child-headed households, and economically disadvantaged families. Distributed items include essential cooking utensils, hygiene supplies, and daily necessities to help families meet their immediate needs and restore minimum living conditions.
All activities are implemented in close coordination with national authorities and humanitarian clusters, ensuring transparent beneficiary selection, safe distribution, and post-distribution monitoring. The project is implemented with strong attention to inclusion, dignity, and accountability, ensuring that women and vulnerable groups are not overlooked.
This emergency response is supported by Japan, with clear project visibility and community awareness throughout implementation.
