Women Tailoring Vocational Training Center (VTC)
YVO, in close coordination and collaboration with community elders and other key stakeholders, successfully selected 208 female trainees and 28 male trainees to participate in a tailoring vocational skills training program in the targeted communities of Nangarhar province, Afghanistan.
This program empowers women, particularly those from rural areas, by equipping them with the skills to establish sustainable livelihoods. Participants begin the course with little to no knowledge of tailoring but leave with the ability to address their families' clothing needs and generate income through home-based tailoring businesses.
Key Features of the Training Program
-Skill Development:
Participants are trained to sew a wide variety of clothing using patterns.
They learn techniques for designing and tailoring garments to meet both personal and market demands.
-Small Business Training:
Trainees gain knowledge on how to set up and run a small home-based tailoring business.
The curriculum includes practical lessons on computing budgets for clothing and managing expenses.
-Literacy Education:
To further empower women, literacy lessons are incorporated into the program, enabling participants to improve their reading and writing skills alongside tailoring.
-Graduation and Recognition:
Upon completion, graduates receive certificates and graduation packs containing essential tools and materials to help them start their tailoring journey.
Impact of the Program
Economic Empowerment: Graduates are equipped to establish home-based businesses, creating an independent source of income.
Community Benefits: Women not only sew clothing for their families but also provide affordable tailoring services to their communities.
Knowledge Sharing: Some graduates go on to become sewing instructors, further spreading the skills and benefits of the program.
This initiative addressed the challenges posed by widespread poverty in Afghanistan's struggling economy, particularly in rural areas. It offers women a practical skillset, fostering self-reliance and contributing to improved household economic stability.
By the end of the program, women leave not just with skills but with confidence and a means to provide for their families, demonstrating the transformative potential of vocational training programs in empowering women and strengthening communities.
