Breaking News : Death Toll from Devastating Floods in Eastern Afghanistan Rises to 23, Over 100 Missing

At least 23 people have been killed, 80 others injured, and more than 100 remain missing after devastating floods swept through Afghanistan’s eastern Nuristan province, according to updated figures released by Taliban authorities on Tuesday.

The floods struck Parun, the capital of Nuristan, and surrounding villages on Monday afternoon following hours of heavy rainfall, according to Taj Mohammad Hemmat, deputy spokesperson for the Taliban-run National Disaster Management Authority.

Hemmat said in a video message that search and rescue operations were ongoing, with the bodies of 15 victims recovered so far.

The flooding caused widespread damage across residential and commercial areas, destroying homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

Hemmat said seven houses were completely destroyed and 23 others were partially damaged. He added that around 70 shops and 11 hotels were either completely or partially damaged, while 40 vehicles were destroyed.

The flooding followed a day of heavy rainfall that impacted several parts of the country, with eastern and southern provinces hit hardest. In addition to structural damage, the floods destroyed farmland, killed livestock, and disrupted the livelihoods of local communities.

Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to extreme weather events, including flash floods, landslides, and droughts. Decades of conflict, widespread poverty, weak infrastructure, and limited emergency response capabilities have heightened risks, particularly in remote and mountainous regions.

Seasonal floods have repeatedly caused deaths and extensive damage across Afghanistan in recent years, destroying homes, agricultural land, and roads and forcing many families to leave affected areas.
